Martand Surya Temple

The Martand Surya Temple was built in the 8th century dedicated to Surya the chief solar deity of hinduism. At that time hinduism was widely follwed in Kashmir. In the early 15th century the temple was destroyed by Sultan Sikandar Shah Miri in a zeal to islamize the society under the advice of Sufi preacher Mir Muhammad Hamadan. To this day the site is holy to Hindus who come here and worship. Kashmir is very unique as Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam all have influenced its culture.
