Dzongkul, Sani

Dzongkul Gompa hugs under an overhanging rockface at 3’850m tucked away in a side valley. It’s foundation is attributed to Naropa – a famous yogi and monk who came from Bihar. He meditated in the caves around which the monastery was built at the turn from the 10th to the 11th century.

Our kitchen follows us everywhere and makes sure even our picnics live up to Gulzar’s very high standards!

Sani Monastery was started in the 1st century. It is thought to be the oldest religious site in the whole region of Ladakh and Zanskar. Padmasambhava, or Guru Rinpoche, is said to have dwelt here for five years.

This Maitreya Buddha is believed to be the oldest statue in the whole of Ladakh. It dates from the 1st century and proves that Buddhism first came to Zanskar through Kashmir. Tibetean Buddhism only arrived in the aerea in the 8th to 10th century.
