Indien Ladakh 1988
We went on our second trip to India in 1988 and headed to Ladakh for mountains and Buddhism.
First stop was Bombay
Next we went to Delhi
At Srinagar we enjoyed the relaxed houseboat hospitality of the Kashmiris
Finally Zoji-La opend for traffic after snow clearing and road maintanance – we were awe struck by the landscape we travelled through
Lamayuru was the first buddhist moanstery we ever visited
More spectacular landscape and a night in simple tents brought us to Alchi
In 1988 I was able to take pictures inside the monasteries – even in Alchi
On to Leh – then a small settlement
We stayed across the valley at the Ladakh Serai below Stok palace
At Thiksey monastery the monks were all busy and we missed watching them chanting
Hemis was much smaller than today
Next day we went to the old capital Shey
Some of the monks from Thiksey were perfoming a ceremony with chanting at a farm outside Shey and invited us to come along
On the flight back to Sriniagar we had a glimpse of some 8’000er peaks
Back in Srinagar we headed into town
