Wayanad – rain forest
The drive from Ooty takes us through undulating mountain terrain and slowly brings us from 2’400m to 750m and into the rainforest. The trees grow dense and tall – up to 60 meters and the underbrush is alive with anything from leeches to monkey and rich birdlife. We stop at the Vythiri Resort at Wayanad in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which again is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hotel is dedicated to eco friendliness and giving you an authentic jungle experience. We relax, take a guided walk in the forest, go for a boat ride on a small lake, meet the Indian (or Malabar) giant squirrel and watch an excellent Indian dancer perform in the evening. Leaving Wayanad we go down the final and sheer 500 meter drop of the Western Ghats to the coastal plains of Kerala.
