Shey 2020

Shey is located about 15 km upvalley from Leh. It was founded in the 10th century and was the summer capital of Ladakh. The palace / gompa is part in ruins and part a running monastry. Most remarkable is the giant gilde statue of the sitting Shakyamuni Buddha inside. It is said to be the second largest such statue in Ladakh. As you round the corner under the monastry you will come across some rock carvings.
