Thiksey 2020
Thiksey Gompa is the largest and most important monastery in Ladakh. looking at it from the parking lot you will immediatly recognize the similarity to the potola palace in Lhasa albeit it beeing much smaller.
Today about 70 to 80 monks live at the gompa and fill the impressive assembly hall with the sound of their chanting.
For the visit of the Dalai Lama in 1970 a Maitreya Temple was added. It contains a 15 meter high statue of the Maitreya Buddha, the largest of its kind in Ladakh.
